It finally happened. After using Gmail as a main way of emailing back and forth since May 20, 2005 I have finally reached the storage limit. Over the last few months I have managed to trim off percentages here and there and at some points brought it down to “using 87%”, but now I have finally hit the limit. As of this writing, I can write to my heart’s content and even save but when I click send I receive the message below. So, I’m off to run some queries to try to figure out where I can trim the fat.
In the past I have tried to pull down an archive of my Gmail using Thunderbird but that seems to always time out after only downloading a few hundred e-mails.
What I find most interesting about the limit is that Gmail makes money off of showing ads based on my e-mail content. One would think I should have unlimited storage or at least some ratio based on how many e-mails I have stored.
Have you ever received the message below? It definitely makes me wonder whether or not I should switch back to my Yahoo! Account and/or start saving more locally using Thunderbird and no longer take advantage of Gmail’s search abilities.
